Summer Opportunities planning underway
Lannon Principal and Summer Opportunities Coordinator Brian Balfany reported on plans for the upcoming summer school.
Changes for this year’s program include:
- a move to online registration through the Infinite Campus student management system that the district uses for middle and high school course scheduling; and
- streamlining the locations of the program from four buildings to two.
Registration will no longer be a first-come-first-served process, and instead will use a computerized lottery system that attempts to give as many students their top choices as possible. Parents will no longer need to scurry to get into the registration system for fear of not getting popular classes. Previously, the vast majority of families registered for classes within the first 10 minutes registration opened, putting strain on the servers running the registration system and, at times, crashing the system. Classes will not be assigned until after the one-month registration process has ended.
In a move to create more efficient use of facilities, classes will be held at just Hamilton High School and Maple Avenue Elementary School. Willow Springs Learning Center and Templeton Middle School will no longer have summer classes.
Course fees, which range from $4 to $20 to cover consumable materials for each class, will not increase. Families that use the shuttle bus service from Sussex’s Village Park and Lannon, Marcy and Woodside elementary schools, however, will be charged $20 to cover a portion of the shuttle service expense. In the past the shuttle service was provided without a fee. School Board member Jennifer Waltz suggested putting a $40 family cap on the shuttle fee.
Enrichment courses and middle school promotional courses are set for June 19 – July 14. Students will have off Monday and Tuesday, July 3 and 4, for the Fourth of July holiday. High school credit recovery classes will have the same structure as in the past with varied class schedules.
Personnel action
In personnel matters, the School Board:
- approved the retirement request of Hamilton special education teacher Robin Oehlert, effective at the end of the school year;
- accepted the resignation of Woodside associate kitchen employee Claudia Weiss; and
- appointed Stacie Benson as a part-time Maple Avenue Title I paraprofessional.
