Nondiscrimination self-evaluation report given
The district recently completed a self-evaluation regarding student nondiscrimination. The evaluation, which the state Department of Public Instruction requires of all public schools every five years, looks into the areas of counseling, athletic and extracurricular activities, and awarding of scholarships, recognition and achievement.
Human Resources and Organizational Development Director John Roubik presented the written report which stated, “The status of nondiscrimination and equality of educational opportunities in the Hamilton School District is good.”
Recommendations from the report are to:
- focus on the Academic and Career Planning requirement beginning this year;
- monitor budgets and salaries of athletic and extracurricular areas to assure equity is maintained especially related to use of volunteer coaches or other funding through sources such as booster clubs;
- inform students and parents about available extracurricular and athletic activities; and
- monitor award applicants and recipients according to race, gender, special education and English language learners.
Study shows no space to take more Open Enrollment students
School administrators calculated that the district will not have enough classroom space to accept additional Open Enrollment students for the 2017-18 school year due to projected resident enrollment. The School Board will not take official action until January, but it is unlikely that more students will be recommended for the 2017-18 school year. Open Enrollment is a statewide program that allows students to attend public schools outside of their districts if space is available.
