School Board names athletic field in honor of Stan Grove
Hamilton High School will dedicate its athletic field Sept. 20 to long-time high school science teacher and football coach Stan Grove. The School Board passed a resolution unanimously at its meeting commemorating Grove’s successful teaching and coaching experience in the district. The dedication ceremonies will be at 6:45 p.m., prior to the Chargers’ football game against Menomonee Falls.
School Board Member Deborah Briggs supported the resolution and renaming of the high school field to Grove Athletic Field.
“I think it’s about time,” Briggs said of renaming the field.
Grove retired last December after 41 successful years of coaching – 32 of which were with the Hamilton Chargers Football Program. He also coached Boys’ Golf for 39 years. Grove taught and coached at Bonduel High School for two years before joining the Hamilton School District in 1963. He retired from teaching chemistry in 1997, but continued coaching.
With an overall record of 205-106-1 in Hamilton, Grove’s coaching tenure included four conference championships in 1980, 1994, 1995 and 1996. He was winning coach of the 1984 Shrine game. Grove is a member of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association and was elected to its Hall of Fame on March 27, 1999.
In November of 1995, high school football team members requested the athletic field name change. School Board members agreed with the proposal, effective upon his retirement from coaching. Prior to his retirement, Grove had been only the third varsity football coach in the school’s history.
Additional contigency position approved
After reviewing enrollment projections for the 2002-03 school year that show eight “hot spots” where administrators are concerned about class size, the School Board approved funding an additional full-time equivalency teacher and two half-time instructional assistant contigency positions. The costs including salary and benefits are $67,000 for the teacher and $40,000 for the aide positions. Adminsitrators told School Board members that depending on actual enrollments, they may request another contigency position at the next meeting.
School Board members saw preliminary enrollment projections in May and accepted adminstrative recommendations to reduce 1.5 full-time positions at the middle and high school and add two elementary contigency positions at the elementary level. Recent enrollments indicate there will be greater numbers of elementary students than originally projected.
Administrators will decide where the contigency positions will be allocated as the first day of school draws near.
Referendum matters approved
Necessary paperwork for the Nov. 5 referendum ballots was approved. At the June 17 meeting, School Board members voted to ask citizens to decide whether the district should go ahead with a Marcy Elementary School renovation and remodeling project, Hamilton High School fine arts and learning center addition and operating costs for the high school addition.
Administrators were directed to work with attorneys to develop the proper public notices and ballot wording.
Costs are $6.85 million for the Marcy project, $6.75 million for the fine arts and learning center, and $124,000 annually for operational costs. Combined, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay an additional $49 to support the projects and operational costs.
