November 15, 1999

The Hamilton School Board accepted the 1998-99 Co-Curricular Activities Report Nov. 15 at its regular meeting. Hamilton High School Athletic & Activities Director Mike Gosz provided an overview of the past year highlighting the year’s improvements and recommendations for the future.

Among the improvements Gosz reported were:

  • finding alternative ways to fund athletics and activities;
  • revising the award system to re-install the JV letter and include the sport or activity insignia on the chevron;
  • creating a new travel guide and coaches’ handbook that outline policies and necessary forms;
  • refurbishing of the Little Theater at a cost of $50,000 which is supported through fundraising and public donations;
  • addressing the coaches’ and advisors’ salary schedule; and
  • purchasing a new baseball scoreboard and Booster Club supplying new track hurdles.

Recommendations for the future include:

  • improving facilities such as the baseball field and tennis courts;
  • establishing the southeast area of the Hamilton athletic stadium for a separate soccer stadium and softball field;
  • investing in 60 football helmets;
  • developing individual sport and activity team rule books;
  • changing the structure of high school cheerleading teams to include three teams — one for varsity football and basketball, one for junior varsity football and basketball and one for varsity soccer and wrestling;
  • analyzing game suspensions in relationship to the Student Assistance Program;
    exploring the possibility of adding girls golf and cooperating with Menomonee Falls for a hockey team; and
  • increasing athletic trainer coverage.

Board members indicated that the recommendations will be considered in the normal budget process.

Enrollment projections for the 2000-2001 school year were reported. Educational Services and Human Resources Director Dean Schultz indicated that a conservative estimate of .5 percent is predicted.

He said that even though subdivisions in the district continue to grow, communities are controlling the growth and developments are occurring in phases. Enrollment next school year is expected to be 3,756 students compared to 3,736 this year.

Not included in the projections are the additional enrollment from the all-day 5-year-old kindergarten option that will be available next year. Those numbers will be available after January.

Board members were informed about the 1999-2000 school election calendar. The positions for Town of Lisbon, Village of Butler and Village of Menomonee Falls are up in the spring election. The positions are held by Dawn Van Aacken, Deborah Briggs and Cary Cumming, respectively.
