Hamilton High School (HHS) hosted a hands-on career exploration event on October 13 to introduce students to the opportunities available in law enforcement. The inaugural ‘Behind the Badge: Law Enforcement Career Experience’ was a collaboration between HHS and the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department. It is the first of HHS’s new “Career Exploration Events” series designed to support students as they explore potential careers and prepare for life after high school.

“We wanted to give students an opportunity to see firsthand the many career paths available in law enforcement and what it takes to pursue them,” shares Hamilton School Resource Officer Deputy Leah Estes. “From patrol and investigations to K9 and specialized response teams, there are so many opportunities to serve and make a difference in the community. Our hope is that students leave this experience with a better understanding of the profession, new ideas for their futures and a sense of what they can start doing now to prepare for a career in law enforcement.”
The experience introduced students to a variety of law enforcement careers including K9 handling, Tactical Enforcement Units, drone operation and computer forensics lab work. Through equipment displays and specialty demonstrations, students gained insight into the skills and training required for these important public service roles.
HHS thanks the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department professionals who helped make this career exploration experience possible and who shared their time, knowledge and expertise with students. HHS looks forward to hosting other local professionals as part of their new Career Exploration Events. Local professionals who are interested in working with HHS should contact Hamilton High School Associate Principal/Extended Learning Coordinator Marquea Goike at goikma@hamilton.k12.wi.us or (262) 246-6471.
