Summer School Report and 2024 dates approved

Enrollment for the 2023 Summer Opportunities program was 1932 students. That is up 228 students from the 2022 program enrollment. Recommended dates for the 2024 program are June 17 through July 12 with July 4 and 5 off in celebration of the July 4th holiday.

Planning parameters for 2024-25 calendar approved

The following parameters will be used for development of a 2024-25 school calendar draft:

  • Maximizing student instructional time to exceed state requirements
  • Scheduling student break times that best fit the academic needs of students including spring break which is typically during the last full week in March and a four-day weekend at Easter
  • Maintaining days set aside for professional development and time for teachers to prepare and close out their classrooms
  • Offering opportunities for parents and teachers to confer about student progress
  • Maintaining 192 teacher contract days

School site plans approved

Principals from Silver Spring Intermediate School and all four elementary schools presented school site plans. The site plan process provides a productive way for leadership teams to prioritize a school year focus while taking into account common goals and data from the previous year.

Board sets goals for 2023-24

Following interviews with each School Board member, Superintendent Paul Mielke, Ph.D. established goals and success indicators for the 2023-24 school year. The following areas of focus were approved:

  • Academic Excellence and Improvement
  • Student Well-Being and Positive School Environment
  • Employee Retention and Quality
  • Enrollment Management and Facilities Planning
  • Financial Stability and Management
  • Community Engagement and Communication
  • Strategic Plan Implementation and Progress Monitoring

Reports and documents approved

Board members reviewed reports and documents including:

  • Girls’ Swimming and Diving Co-Op Agreement for 2024-25 and 2025-26
  • Reviewed and revised board policies

Personnel matters

School Board members approved the appointments of:

  • Kristina Kender, Paraprofessional–Instructional Mathematics at Templeton Middle School, effective September 25;
  • Joseph Harkins, Grade 4 Math & Science Teacher at Marcy Elementary School, effective October 16;
  • Lesli Minder, Associate Kitchen Employee at Maple Avenue Elementary School, effective October 2; and
  • Chrystal Schaffner, Associate Kitchen Employee at Marcy Elementary School, effective October 13.

School Board members approved the resignations of:

  • Elizabeth Chetney, Associate Kitchen Employee at Lannon Elementary School, effective September 28; and
  • Sara Lunde, Paraprofessional Special Services at Marcy Elementary School, effective October 20.
