Custodial, maintenance, grounds crew recognized


Custodial, maintenance and buildings and grounds staff members were recognized for all the ways they keep schools safe, clean and healthy. Business Services Assistant Superintendent Bryan Ruud and Buildings & Grounds Manager Jeffrey Grove described how staff are dedicated to the district.

Ruud gave a recent example of a custodian who went above and beyond his duties. The Saturday before Labor Day, heavy rains pooled near the new high school addition and caused damage to a portion of the building. The off-duty custodian, who was dropping off his wife, took the time to drive past the new addition and saw the problem. Custodial staff members were called in over the weekend, and by the start of school, nearly all of the clean-up was completed so that most students were unaware of the flooding.

Ruud said people often don’t hear a lot about the custodial staff because they do their job so well.

AODA measures in place to help students, families

Student Assistance Program and AODA Coordinator Kristin Hasbrook presented an annual report to School Board members about efforts to keep students from getting involved in alcohol and other drugs. Providing initial screening and AODA referral services, helping families find appropriate community services and conducting activities in the schools comprised 2014-15 activities.

Middle and high school activities included individual student support and presentations to students about drugs and alcohol, depression, harassment, bullying, body image and internet safety. In addition, selected students received peer trainer instruction, a support group for students struggling with self-esteem was created, and a grant to purchase iPads for use with high school families and students was obtained. Districtwide activities involved coordination of Hamilton Connects, which featured 11 presentations for parents. Hasbrook completed certification for working with children of trauma and plans to get additional training in crisis intervention services for students.

No space to take Open Enrollment students

School administrators calculated that the district will not have enough classroom space to take additional Open Enrollment students for the 2016-17 school year due to projected resident enrollment. Open Enrollment is a statewide program that allows students to attend public schools outside of their districts if space is available.

Updates given

  • Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator and Hamilton High School Associate Principal Pete Ferge reported on the district’s participation in the Education for Employment (E4E) consortium, comprised of 13 southeastern school districts. The consortium, which coordinates a plan to provide career- and college-readiness components, is on hold until the state Department of Public Instruction determines how to meet the requirements of a new state statute that requires all eighth-graders to have an Academic and Career Plan by 2017.
  • School Board members approved minor revisions to Section 504 policies and procedures as presented by Special Services Supervisor John Peterson. A parent form was added. Section 504 is a federal anti-discrimination, civil rights statute that requires the needs of students with disabilities to be met as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled are met.

Personnel matters

In personnel matters, the School Board

  • appointed Katie Schmanski as a Maple Avenue special services paraprofessional and Sara Doubek as Lannon special services paraprofessional; and
  • accepted the resignation of Lori Laszkiewicz as a Hamilton associate kitchen employee.
