Changes recommended for educator effectiveness model

Educational Services and Human Resources Director John Roubik provided an update on the status of the supervision-evaluation process. Roubik described feedback provided by staff at the May 13 Supervision-Evaluation Committee meeting. He said the committee recommended that administrators find ways to streamline the process through technical changes, reduce the number of artifacts and reflections associated with the documentation log and emphasize the importance of the classroom walk-throughs and follow-up conversations between teachers and principals.

Key administrative recommendations for changes to the educator effective model for 2015-16 include:

  • finalize modifications to forms and criteria;
  • adjust the numbers of standards that teachers reflect on in the Professional Goal Setting form;
  • adjust the walk-through form to increase administrator classroom visits and streamline the documentation process;
  • reduce the client survey to once per year; and
  • reduce the number of artifacts for each standard and omit the communication log as required component.

Next year’s staff development presented

Instructional Services Supervisor Katie Little, Ph.D., presented the 2015-16 Professional Development Plan as developed by the Professional Development Planning Team. The plan forecasts areas of training in the coming year which include the Technology & Learning Academy, educator effectiveness second year implementation, vertical teaming, personalized learning, Response to Intervention Ion technology, elementary English-language arts and writing, middle school critical literacy and new teacher orientation.

High school fire alarm system to be upgraded

The district will upgrade the fire alarm system at Hamilton High School over the next five years. Total cost for the upgrades will be $446,490. The district will be billed only as each of the three phases are completed.

Many recognized for excellence

Hamilton School Board members recognized community members and many students at the June 2 meeting including:


  • Lannon Lions’ Club for providing Lannon Elementary School with 13 HoverCams which makes viewing of real-time objects and actions possible for students in a classroom. Lannon Principal Dick Ladd said, “Due to their kindness, every classroom teacher now has this new technology.”


  • Hamilton High School students Erin Magoon, Chloe Simchick and Ciara Cronin who took first place in the high school division at the Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association Battle of the Books. From a list of 20 young adult and adult books, the girls read a total of 6,816 pages and competed against 67 teams across the state. Every question asked in a battle is answered by the title and author of the book. Not able to attend the meeting was Krystal Fedie. Their advisor is Hamilton library-media specialist Jacque Gorski.


  • Forensics team members Danielle Kallis, who won the state championship title in Special Occasion Speaking, Rachel Betters who took sixth place in Radio, and Erin Magoon, finalist in Four-Minute Informative. Their performances helped Hamilton’s forensics team earn 12th place in its division at the Wisconsin Forensics Coaches’ Association state meet at Ripon College. Not able to attend the meeting were Kavya Ayalasomayajula, finalist in Storytelling, and Samantha Moore and McKenzie Fowler, who were finalists in Play Acting. Their coach is Hamilton communication arts teacher Barry Holloway.


  • Hamilton Charger Robotics 70-member team which earned the FIRST regional Chairman’s Award for the fourth time in six years. The team represents Hamilton High School in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) international high school robotics competition. The Chairman’s Award is FIRST’s most prestigious team award and supercedes winning the competition itself. The award was created to recognize teams that demonstrate the greatest commitment to spreading passion about science and technology in their communities and schools. Their advisors are Hamilton social studies teacher Lori Hinytz and applied engineering and technology teacher Joe Premo.


  • High school art students who were regional Scholastic Art Award recipients. Kimberly Inthavong, who earned a Silver Key for her art portfolio, and Pengxue Vang, who received an Honorable Mention for ceramics and glass, were presented with certificates from the School Board. Sofia Jaegersberg, who was awarded an Honorable Mention for ceramics and glass, was unable to attend the meeting. Art teacher Lore Lisheron described the accomplishments of the students.

Personnel, other business

In personnel business, the School Board:

  • agreed to contract for occupational and physical therapy with Dominiczak Therapy Associates for a total cost of $125,253. The agency serves 18 school districts in Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties. Estimated cost savings over hiring in-house therapists or contracting with CESA is $15,000-20,000;
  • appointed Benjamin Helm as a Hamilton social studies teacher, Carrie Maxwell as a Hamilton science teacher, Janice Rush as part-time district special services program support, Lauren Kelty as part-time Hamilton communication arts teacher, Ann Schneider as Hamilton communication arts teacher, and library-media specialists Eve Bruce at Woodside, Wendy Horsens at Marcy, Brian Latus at Maple Avenue, and Sherri Morrill at Lannon; and
  • approved continued partnership with Elmbrook School District to hire a Mandarin teacher who teaches a shared course offered to both Elmbrook and Hamilton students and agreement for a shared deaf and hard of hearing instructor.

In other business, the board:

  • approved Special Education Procedures Handbook and Bloodborne Pathogens Procedures, both with no recommended changes, as presented by Special Services Supervisor John Peterson; and
  • authorized contracting with Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA) #1 totaling $203,347 to provide special education and educational support in 2015-16; and
  • gave Superintendent Kathleen Cooke, Ph.D., authorization to participate in CESA consortium grants in 2015-16.
