Committees review, revise five curricular areas in 2014-15

The process to update curriculum is a five-year cycle in which teacher representatives from across the district review and revise content in 18 curricular areas.

In her report to the School Board, Instructional Services Supervisor Katherine Little, Ph.D., summarized revisions being made this year in music, social studies, world languages, elementary writing and information & technology literacy.

In each area, committees establish clear grade level and unit learning targets, student “I can ” statements and rigorous expectations. The curriculum is designed to be developmentally appropriate, sequential and aligned with state and national standards.


Five students approved for early graduation

In a report, Hamilton High School Principal Candis Mongan presented the applications of five juniors – Kaying Lor, Kristin Matthias, Lindsey Paquette, Melody Zimmerman and E’mari Zollicoffer – who applied to graduate early. The students met School Board policy requirements and will be eligible to graduate in January 2016.


Carl Perkins consortium participation approved

The School Board approved continued participation in the Carl Perkins grant consortium offered through CESA #1 which provides the district with $13,189 in grant funding this year. The purpose of the grant is to provide students with academic and technical skills to succeed in a knowledge- and skills-based economy. It supports career and technical education that prepares students for postsecondary education and careers.

The consortium provides grant-writing management, interaction with professionals from other districts, exposure to what is occurring at state and national levels and consultation services. Other districts in the consortium are Brown Deer, Cedarburg, Elmbrook, Germantown, Grafton, Kettle Moraine, Mequon-Thiensville, Muskego-Norway, New Berlin, Nicolet, Northern Ozaukee, Pewaukee, Port Washington, Shorewood, Waukesha and Whitefish Bay. In his report, Pete Ferge, Hamilton associate principal and extended learning opportunities coordinator, recommended continued involvement in the consortium which comes at no cost to the district.
