Hamilton brings farm-to-table learning to life with Adopt A Cow program

The Hamilton School District Nutritional Services Department is excited to announce its participation in Discover Dairy’s Adopt A Cow program. This unique, year-long educational experience connects students with agriculture in an engaging and meaningful way at no cost to the district or families.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to connect students to where their food comes from,” explains Hamilton School District Director of Nutritional Services Kira King. King adds that the Nutritional Services Team is proud to serve three varieties of fresh milk every day for school lunch. “In February, we celebrated Dairy Day where students enjoyed delicious favorites like cheese and cream puffs. They also got to see photos of our adopted calf, which was very exciting for many students!”

The Discover Dairy program allows schools to “adopt” a real dairy calf and receive regular photo and story updates documenting the animal’s growth and life on the farm. While the calf remains on the farm, the experience brings agriculture directly into the school, allowing students to follow along as their calf grows from a 100-pound newborn into a thriving member of the herd. This is the second school year Hamilton has participated in the program.

Hamilton’s calf is named Solas and was born September 17, 2025 on McFarlandale Dairy Farm in Watertown, Wisconsin. King says the students regularly ask for updates on Solas. “This aligns perfectly with our mission to promote nutrition education and help students understand the journey from farm to table.”

The Hamilton School District Nutritional Services Department encourages teachers and families to follow along as students embark on this exciting agricultural journey.
