Seniors Tirish Suresh and Nathan Tran were named winners in the Wisconsin Journalism Education Association (WisJEA) January Mini Contest. Their article, “Lifting in the Gym for the First Time? Here’s What You Need to Know,” was selected as a top exemplar in the print category.
The contest invited student journalists from across Wisconsin to submit their best work. Suresh and Tran were praised by professional judges for their creative voice and engaging writing style. Under the leadership of Charger Press Adviser Sarah Kowalske, the Hamilton journalism program continues to be a leader in student media.
“This win is proof of the talent and hard work of our students,” said Julie Tiedens, WisJEA Vice President. “We are extremely proud to celebrate their successes.”
Senior Evan Rosenau was named the December winner for his written piece, “The Woman Who Changed Writing Forever – Virginia Woolf – Erased Queer Stories.” Student reporters, editors, photographers, videographers and multimedia creators can submit their best work related to the WisJEA monthly contest theme. Submissions must be student-produced journalism: text, video, photography, audio or multimedia. Submissions must be accompanied by a 50-100 word description of the story behind the piece.
The Wisconsin Journalism Education Association Mini Contest series is designed as a yearlong opportunity to celebrate and elevate the work of Wisconsin high school student journalists. Entries are judged using a comprehensive rubric focusing on technical quality, creativity, and overall impact.
