Hamilton’s “Play Group” enrolling preschoolers

Hamilton High School (HHS) is enrolling 3- to 5-year-olds for its Play Group child development class. Play Group provides a preschool classroom setting where children from the community are paired with HHS students studying Early Childhood Education. Under the direction of their family and consumer sciences teacher, HHS students participate in activities with children to promote growth and development.

“My students’ goals are to build relationships with their students and families, plan age-appropriate activities and practice assessing young children,” explains Hamilton High School Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Janine Farrell.

HHS offers three courses about child development and education. During Early Childhood Education 2: Careers/Assistant Childcare, students receive 9-12 weeks of instruction focused on earning their Assistant Child Care Teacher Certification from Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and then spend the final 5 weeks in Play Group. This is an opportunity only offered to juniors and seniors who have previously passed the Early Childhood Education 1: Foundations course.

Registration is open for the Play Group 2025 spring session. Children will spend approximately one hour at the high school every weekday during the 5 week program. Preference of enrollment will be given to those who are able to attend all or most Play Group days. The cost is $25 per child.
