Burg chosen for Hamilton Alumnus Award

Graduate Jerome “Jerry” Burg, from the class of 1968, has been named Hamilton High School’s 2024 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient posthumously.

While a student at Hamilton High School (HHS), Mr. Burg was a class treasurer, student council representative and a member of the National Honor Society. He was on Junior Prom Court and named Homecoming King his senior year. He belonged to both the German Club and Lettermen’s Club. Mr. Burg was also an incredibly involved athlete who played basketball, golf and football all four years of high school. He was also selected to speak at the 1968 graduation ceremony.

Mr. Burg’s widow Barbara says that her late husband would be deeply honored to receive this recognition. “Jerry often spoke fondly of his time at HHS, recalling the teachers and mentors who profoundly influenced his life. One of his most impactful mentors was Jim Stracka, a teacher and football coach who recognized Jerry’s academic and athletic potential,” recalls Barbara. “It was Coach Stracka’s encouragement that led Jerry to apply to the United States Air Force Academy, a decision that set the course for his distinguished military career.”

Mr. Burg graduated from the United States Air Force Academy, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later obtained a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State and a master’s degree in Business from the University of Northern Colorado. Mr. Burg went on to be an instructor pilot and earned a coveted seat in the F-15. He completed the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia and was subsequently assigned to NORAD. Mr. Burg went on to graduate from the National War College. He was assigned to numerous Air Force Bases around the United States and the world before retiring as a Colonel in 1998 following 26 years of service. Upon retirement, Mr. Burg embarked on a new career in community association management. He founded Burg Management Company. He also largely developed the local community association manager pre-licensing class at Gulf Coast College in Panama City, Florida and consequently taught the class for nearly a decade.

Barbara says another influential figure in her late husband’s life was his HHS German teacher, Helmut Keitel. “Years later, when we were stationed in Germany, Jerry’s proficiency of the language proved invaluable,” she explains. “He even served as an unofficial interpreter for the Wing Commander at Bitburg Air Base, impressing both his colleagues and the German community, who rarely encountered an American fighter pilot conversational in their language. I have no doubt that Mr. Keitel would have been incredibly proud of him.”

Barbara goes on to say that Mr. Burg’s time at HHS played a pivotal role in shaping his future. “His lifelong thirst for knowledge and his drive to master new skills served him well; first in the military and later as a successful entrepreneur. He continued to play football and basketball well into his thirties and remained an avid golfer throughout his life.”

“I’m incredibly grateful to John Williams for nominating him for this award, ensuring that Jerry’s legacy and contributions are remembered,” adds Barbara.
