Hamilton softball team joins forces off the field to pack and donate lunches

Members of the Hamilton High School softball team pack almost 200 bag lunches for individuals facing food insecurity. On May 31, thirteen volunteers from the team gathered to make sandwiches and assemble the bag lunches. The project stemmed from a Hamilton High School AP Language and Composition class, in which students were tasked with creating and running their own service projects. The bagged lunches will be distributed in Milwaukee through The Gathering.

“Food security is a rising issue in the United States,” explains Hamilton High School junior Lauren Bickler. “We were excited to have an immediate impact on our community.”

“I think this was a great opportunity for our team to come together and do something good for the community,” says Hamilton High School junior Maya Topolovich. “During this time of the season it can become very stressful with playoffs, and this hour or two was a great way to take our minds off softball and enjoy each other.”

The group assembled 196 lunch bags exceeding their initial goal of 150 meals. Bickler says they were concerned the extra food might go to waste. However, as soon as she arrived at the Just One More Ministry warehouse, she realized that was not the case. “They were tremendously appreciative of our work, stating that they distribute almost 800 meals a week,” says Bickler. “We found it important to aid such a pressing issue.”
