Hamilton senior volunteers celebrate American Education Week

Dozens of local senior citizens visited the Hamilton Fine Arts Center November 16 to celebrate American Education Week and connect with Hamilton High School students from National Honor Society and Student Council. The annual celebration included a game of intergenerational trivia and a concert performance by Marcy Elementary School students.

“I really enjoyed the high school students,” said Connie Nemetz who has been a senior volunteer for many years and is a member of Hamilton High School class of 1965, the school’s first graduating class. “The students were very organized and helpful. The game was well thought out and fun for the seniors!”

American Education Week runs November 13-17, 2023. It is an opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference.

This celebration is a long-standing tradition for the Hamilton School District where the Seniors & Students Volunteer Program began more than 25 years ago. The program provides opportunities for volunteers over the age of 55 to be involved with current students and continue a relationship with the school district even after their own children graduate.

National Honor Society members wrote and hosted the trivia game, beginning with a warning to seniors that they were not allowed to use their smartphones to search for answers. Teams of seniors and students worked together to answer questions like ‘What well-loved theme park opened its gates on July 17, 1955?’

In addition to community events such as this, there are two main components of the Seniors & Students Volunteer Program; Pen Pal Program and Senior Cafes. The Pen Pal Program pairs senior volunteers with fourth grade students across the District. They exchange letters throughout the school year, followed by an opportunity to eventually meet in spring when each elementary school hosts pen pal parties. Many senior volunteers also take part in the Senior Cafes at each elementary school which involves enjoying lunch with students every other week.

Visit the Hamilton School District website for more information or to sign up to become a senior volunteer.
