Hamilton Future Educators Club awards scholarships

Two Hamilton High School alumni, Emily Sereg and Michael Barnes, were awarded $500 scholarships by Hamilton’s Future Educators Club (FEC). Sereg is a student at University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and Barnes at Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must be a Hamilton graduate enrolled in a teacher education program and complete one semester of student-teaching during the 2021-22 school year. Applicants were judged based on the information provided in the application, transcript, letter of recommendation and personal essay.

In her personal essay, Sereg described her early passion for teaching starting in elementary school when she often ate lunch in the special education classroom so that students did not feel left out. In middle school she skipped recess to help friends who were stuck on math problems.

“Once I got into high school, I knew that I could combine my passion for individuals with disabilities and my love of helping others if I became a special education teacher,” Sereg said.

Barnes said that being a kid at heart helps him make connections with students to better understand their perspectives. By asking himself if he would have interest in the lesson as a student, Barnes believes he can be a more effective teacher.

“It’s undeniably a priority to keep students active and engaged and for them to genuinely enjoy being at school,” Barnes said.

FEC was established in 2016 for Hamilton students interested in pursuing a career in education. Club members attend monthly meetings where they hear from professional educators on topics ranging from school selection, college coursework, clinical experiences, employment outlook and challenges of the profession.

Those wanting to support FEC can visit Cafe Zupas in Menomonee Falls May 3 on Teacher Appreciation Day when a portion of sales will go to the scholarship program. Other funding comes from staff donations and club activities.

FEC advisors are Hamilton High School Mathematics Teachers Penny Komatz and Molly Dederich.
