Maple Avenue to celebrate Red Ribbon Week

With the help of its Uniting Kids and Community (UKC) Program, Maple Avenue Elementary School will celebrate Red Ribbon Week and launch its community service project Oct. 20-31. Red Ribbon Week is a national celebration to support the fight to keep children, schools and communities safe and healthy.

The Maple Avenue fifth grade UKC will launch “Champions Challenge! Change for Charity!” as its first school service project during Red Ribbon Week. Fifth-graders will hold a fundraiser beginning Oct. 20 by collecting change in the school’s front lobby to donate to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association.

The drive will conclude Oct. 31 at 2:30 p.m. with the annual schoolwide Harvest Stomp in the school gymnasium followed by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. A Maple Avenue staff member will participate in the challenge for every $25 collected. Principal Kristin Koeper-Hamblin will participate in the challenge if the $500 schoolwide goal is achieved.

The Red Ribbon Week, with a theme of “Be a Champion! Make Healthy Choices,” will be celebrated at Maple Avenue with the following daily themes and activities:

  • Monday, Oct. 20 – “Think like a Champion!” – wear red and read day.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 21 – “Dream like a Champion!” – pajamas day.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 22 – “Work out like a Champion!” – fitness clothing day.
  • Thursday, Oct. 23 – “Dress like a Champion!” – dress up day.

Maple Avenue’s UKC is designed to engage and empower fifth-graders to make connections with their school as well as the local and global communities through service projects. Students play an active role in planning, coordinating, promoting and carrying out service projects that support their school, community and world. The goal is to help students learn the value of civic responsibility and problem solving as they work towards completing diverse service projects.

Maple Avenue Elementary School is located at W240 N6059 Maple Ave., Sussex.
