Winners named in District Spelling Bee

One champion and four finalists emerged from the 2007 District Spelling Bee held Feb. 15 at Templeton Middle School. The District Spelling Bee drew 36 qualifying students in grades 5-8 from Hamilton School District middle and elementary schools as well as area private schools.

Ashley Herrmann, an eighth-grader from St. Agnes in Butler, was named champion. Finalists who will advance with Herrmann to the regional level are:

  • Blake Antoniewski, Templeton eighth-grader;
  • Amanda Cibulka, Templeton sixth-grader;
  • Mary Kirk, Peace Lutheran sixth-grader; and
  • Angela Greschner, Peace Lutheran seventh-grader.

Students were awarded trophies, certificates and spelling bee pins for their achievements.

Students who won classroom spelling bees vied for the honor of participating in the District Spelling Bee. The five top spellers in the district event will compete at the regional bee in Northern Ozaukee. Regional winners continue to the Wisconsin spelling bee in hopes of qualifying for the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in June.

The Cooperative Educational Service Agency (CESA) #1 sponsors the district and regional spelling bees. For these events, CESA determines “district” as a geographical area that typically includes several school districts and private schools.

Templeton reading specialist Patricia Sankey coordinated the event.
