Hamilton Chess Team has strong finish to season

Hamilton High School Chess Team members finished their season with a strong performance March 11 and 12 at the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Championship in Oshkosh.

In competition with 15 teams, the varsity team finished in third place in Division I. After a loss in the first round, the team made it though the next four rounds with no losses. Varsity players earning medals for their performances were Samuel Fischer, Alex Schwartz, Robert Pothier and Gary Peterson. Benjamin Helm won a trophy for “Best 5th Board in the State” in Division I. The divisions are based on ability, not school size.

Junior varsity players who participated in the tournament were Gina Philippi, Dana Knoerr and Thomas Sokol.
