The Hamilton School District will recognize volunteers who participate in its Seniors & Students Volunteer Program March 24 beginning at 7:15 a.m. at Lannon Elementary School.
Waukesha County Executive Daniel Finley will speak to the volunteers before they are presented with small gifts of appreciation for their service to the district.
Seniors & Students is a cooperative program between the Hamilton School District and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Waukesha County designed to recruit, train and place senior citizen volunteers age 55 and older in the Hamilton School District. Volunteers work with teachers and other staff to support student learning.
The Seniors and Students Program has successfully grown since it was originally implemented in the 1998-99 school year. A total of 34 tutors serve in six schools to support students and teachers. Volunteers also have been part of the Intergenerational Choir formed at Maple Avenue Elementary School. Last year, more than 30 senior volunteers participated in the choir. In addition to the tutors and choir members, the Age-to-Age Pen Pal Project was created as a spin-off of the original program and involves 126 senior citizens who correspond with 166 elementary school-age children developing real life writing skills. Since its inception, the Seniors and Students Volunteer Program has contributed nearly 15,000 hours of service in the Hamilton School District.
