Hamilton Chess Team has strong finish to season

Hamilton High School Chess Team members finished off their season with impressive results at the Scenic Moraine Chess Association Conference Tournament and State Chess Championships.

In competition with nine teams, the varsity team tied for first place with Brookfield Academy at the conference tournament. Varsity team member Robert Pothier was the tournament champion. The team took second place with six wins and two losses in overall conference play for the season.

The junior varsity team took third place at the conference event. With five wins and three losses in conference events, the team took third place for the season.

At the State Championships in Oskkosh, the junior varsity team placed third among 20 teams. Medal winners were John Kirner who had five wins and one loss, and David Nimmer with four wins and two losses. Other junior varsity team members were Matthew Dlobik and Gary Peterson.

Varsity players who earned medallions at the State Championships were John Franco and Michael Deau, who each had three wins and two losses. Other members of the varsity team were Lisa Regall and Michael Xiong.

The Hamilton All-School Chess Tournament to determine the school champion is underway. The tournament includes 24 students and four staff members and will conclude in May.
