Templeton Middle School eighth grader Seanleander Hemanand took first place in the state in the prestigious Patriot’s Pen essay contest. Sponsored nationwide by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the competition invites more than 60,000 middle school students each year to share their perspectives on patriotism. Hemanand now advances to the national contest to represent Wisconsin.
The theme for this year’s contest was ‘How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?’ TMS students have participated in this annual essay contest for many years. However, this is the first time one of their essays received first place in the state.
“What stands out most about his essay is the strength and maturity of his writing,” explains Templeton Middle School Communication Arts Teacher Lisa Schmeling. ”Seanleander presents a clear and consistent controlling idea from the very beginning, framing patriotism as not ‘grand gestures,’ but as everyday actions and responsibilities.”
“We are incredibly proud of Seanleander’s outstanding accomplishment,” shares Templeton Middle School Principal Brad Hoffmann. “This recognition reflects not only the student’s talent and dedication, but also the commitment of our teachers and families to fostering strong writing skills and civic engagement.”
Schmeling explains how Hemanand’s sophisticated approach to defining a complex concept is impressive for a writer his age. “His essay demonstrates advanced abstract thinking,” she explains. “While many eighth graders focus primarily on concrete examples, he explores broader ideas such as civic responsibility, historical accountability, moral responsibility and unity. This level of conceptual depth reflects strong critical thinking skills.”
National winners will be announced this spring. Hemanand will also be honored April 25 at VFW Post 5716 in New Berlin.
