Willow Springs Learning Center students and families donated approximately 400 toys and clothing items to be given to local families in need this holiday season. Sussex Outreach Services (SOS) will distribute the donated items after students deliver the wrapped gifts to St. James Church on December 13. The Toy Drive has been a Willow Springs tradition for more than 20 years.

Willow Springs Learning Center Principal Renae MacCudden, Ph.D. enjoys watching the donations fill the school lobby each day. “A link is also added to the paper chain for each item that is donated, which helps to decorate the hallways that students use to walk to their classrooms,” explains MacCudden. “One child shared recently that it looked like we were having a birthday party!”
“This toy Drive is an incredible opportunity to teach children of such a young age about the importance of giving to others,” explains Sussex Outreach Services Executive Director Jennifer Waltz. “This Willow Springs Tradition truly makes a difference to so many children in our community, both those who give and those who receive.”
Students began bringing items to school on December 3. On December 13, each 4K student carries a gift for the short walk to St. James Church located next door. SOS volunteers are there ready and waiting for the children. It has become tradition for the students to sing a short song for volunteers before walking back to Willow Springs Learning Center and resuming their school day.
“We really appreciate our families supporting this cause as the students truly enjoy delivering gifts to those who will help get them to families in need” says MacCudden. “This tradition at Willow Springs helps all of us get into the spirit of giving and kicks off the holidays for our staff and students,” she adds.
