Third grade students at Marcy Elementary School brought history, leadership and creativity to life during the school’s long standing annual Wax Museum tradition held May 29.

For almost three decades, third grade students at Marcy have researched and portrayed famous historical figures, athletes, inventors, artists and leaders in an interactive “living museum” experience. Students transform into their chosen figures using costumes and props. Their presentations share important facts and accomplishments with visitors.
“The excitement and confidence the students show make the event fun for everyone,” explains Marcy Third Grade Teacher Mindy Pilecky. “We have been doing this project for 26 years, so every student who has passed through Marcy during that time has had a similar experience. We have even had parents of recent third graders who have participated when they attended Marcy!”
Students spent weeks preparing for the event by selecting and researching a famous person using books and online resources. They organized their findings, wrote speeches, practiced public speaking skills and created costumes and props to accurately portray their historical figure.
Pilecky says the Marcy Wax Museum is more than just a school project. “It is a celebration of learning, hard work and creativity,” she shares. “Students grow as researchers, writers and speakers throughout the process. Families and visitors love seeing the students’ enthusiasm, and the tradition creates lasting memories for everyone involved,” adds Pilecky.
To keep the tradition alive for future classes, second-grade students are invited to attend the rehearsal. The sneak peek gives the younger students an exciting preview of what to look forward to next year.
