Hamilton School District has created a Portrait of a Graduate to provide all families and the wider community with a shared vision of what success looks like for students beyond high school graduation. The five characteristics highlighted in the Hamilton High School Portrait of a Graduate are curiosity, resiliency, accountability, integrity and collaboration.
“Our Portrait of a Graduate is so important because it reflects our commitment to all students, no matter their path,” explains Hamilton High School Associate Principal and Extended Learning Coordinator Marquea Goike. “Whether they are headed to college, a career or another direction, we want to prepare them for the real world. By identifying the key characteristics they need to succeed, we can intentionally build those into their experience throughout their time at Hamilton,” she adds.
A Portrait of a Graduate, also referred to as a Graduate Profile, is a framework developed by a district to outline key skills, mindsets and qualities students should have when they graduate high school. This often includes not only academic knowledge but also essential life and career competencies. A Portrait of a Graduate is designed to guide curriculum and instruction, reflecting values and goals of the larger community.
The process of creating a Hamilton High School Portrait of a Graduate began during the 2024-25 school year and considered input from students, families and staff. The process started with asking staff members to share their perspectives on the most important characteristics for high school graduates to have. A student advisory committee and a parent advisory committee were also created to share their perspectives on what is important to include in Hamilton’s Portrait of a Graduate.
Goike says administrators are grateful for the time students and families spent being part of this process. “We are proud of the final product and the collaboration that brought it to life,” she explains. “In a world where career paths and opportunities are constantly evolving, our ultimate goal is to prepare students for success after high school. By grounding our work in the skills and characteristics we value most, we can help all students thrive in whatever path they choose.”
