Hamilton advances in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge

Two student teams from Hamilton High School competed in the Moody’s Mega Math (M3) Challenge sponsored by Moody’s Foundation and organized by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Both teams placed among the top 200 teams advancing to the second round of judging from more than 1,000 teams in 45 states.

Students who competed in the M3 Challenge are: Team 1 – David Liang, Joyce Chen, Jeremy Daum and Aiken Johnson-Escudero; and Team 2 – Yuchun Wang, Jacob Hartung, Hayden Barth and Tyler Gall.

The M3 Challenge is an internet-based competition in which students have 14 hours to solve an open-ended, applied math-modeling problem focused on a real-world issue.

This year’s challenge problem is “STEM Sells: What is Higher Education Really Worth?” Students gathered data on tuition costs, debt burden and labor statistics to compare the earning potential of various career paths including those of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) versus non-STEM careers. They also attempted to assign mathematical value to qualitative parameters that influence the overall quality of life.

After the second round of judging, six finalist teams will be selected to present their winning solutions April 27 to a panel of mathematical experts at Moody’s Foundation headquarters in New York City. Approximately 65 teams will be recognized with team scholarship prizes, with the champion team receiving $20,000.
