Marcy Elementary School families collected 892 cans of soup in February to contribute to Sussex Outreach Services (SOS) Food Pantry. The idea for the friendly competition between lower and upper grades came from Marcy Leaders Now, eight fifth-graders chosen by classroom teachers to work with school counselor Lori Schlapman to plan and promote charitable school activities.
Kindergarten, first and second grades were Team Chicken with Rice and third, fourth and fifth grades were Team Chicken Noodle. The younger grades won the challenge by merely two cans of soup. Parents, students and teachers rallied to bring in enough soup to fill a minivan.
