Two Hamilton School District students showed their stock market savvy in a statewide contest designed to promote financial literacy and economics.
Templeton Middle School eighth-grader Matthew Kline and Hamilton High School junior Amanda Albrecht each took third place in their age divisions in the statewide Stock Market Simulation Essay Contest sponsored by Economics Wisconsin.
Kline and Albrecht participated in a 10-week computer stock market simulation in which they used a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in companies of their choice. In the process of buying and selling stocks on-line, they learned about stocks, how to research them and the risks and rewards of investing. They then wrote about what they learned from the simulation.
Kline and students in Rhonda Watton’s “Content Reading and Application” class worked in teams to invest in the stock market. Albrecht participated as a student in Brenda Wangen’s “Personal Finance” class. Kline’s essay was among 203 and Albrecht’s was among 230 submitted statewide. They each received a certificate, T-shirt and $25 for their third place finishes.
