Willow Springs Learning Center students and families donated more than 260 toys and clothing items to be given to local families in need this holiday season. Sussex Outreach Services (SOS) will distribute the gift-wrapped, donated items that students delivered to St. James Church on December 12. The Toy Drive has been a Willow Springs tradition for more than 20 years.

“Having St. James Church right next door to Willow Springs makes this tradition even more special,” says Sussex Outreach Services Executive Director Jennifer Waltz. “Each year, our volunteers look forward to welcoming the children, seeing their excitement and hearing them sing for us. Their short visit fills the whole building with joy before they head back to Willow Springs to continue their school day.”
“Each day, the generosity of our community becomes more visible as donations stack up in the lobby,” shares Principal Renae MacCudden, Ph.D. “Our students track every contribution with a new paper chain link, which now brightens our hallway with color and joy!”
“This toy drive offers a wonderful chance to help even our youngest children understand the value of giving,” explains Waltz. “This Willow Springs tradition truly has a meaningful impact on countless children in our community, both those who donate and those who benefit.”
Students began bringing items to school on December 2. On December 12, each 4K student carries a gift for the short walk to St. James Church located next door. SOS volunteers are there ready and waiting for the children. It has become tradition for the students to sing a short song for volunteers before walking back to Willow Springs Learning Center and resuming their school day.
“We really appreciate the thoughtfulness and giving nature of our school families,” MacCudden said. “Students love being part of the process, delivering donations that will make a real difference for families in need. This tradition truly kicks off the holiday season for both staff and students at Willow Springs.”
