Maple Avenue Elementary School students explored the book “Living Life with Leo” during an author-led read aloud and schoolwide art project. Students heard the story of a boy who lost his physical abilities and was confined to a wheelchair. Based on a real life story, the book offers lessons of acceptance and shines a light on how every person is special.

“We were privileged to host author Diane Nienas, whose visit left an indelible mark on our school community,” shares Maple Avenue Elementary School Principal Katie Ritchie. “Diane’s captivating and inspirational presentation not only resonated with students and staff, but also delivered a powerful message of inclusion. Diane’s engaging sessions showcased her passion for fostering a sense of ability and uniqueness in everyone.”
In addition to the read aloud, every student created their own special artwork featuring a cardinal. The project is meaningful to the story, as children are encouraged to find the hidden cardinal featured on every page of the book.
“School visits like this are a way to keep Leo’s memory alive,” says author and Maple Avenue alum Diane Nienas. “Interacting with the children and sharing this story makes it feel as if Leo is still making friends. The kids ask questions and they want to know more about him. There’s no question off limits because I think their curiosity is so important.”
