The Seniors & Students Volunteer Program is designed to recruit and place volunteers age 55 and older in the Hamilton School District. Volunteers support student learning with both in-person and at-home opportunities. Volunteers are invited to gather for an annual kick-off celebration in October. In the spring, volunteers participating in our Pen Pal Program are invited to end-of-the-year parties at each elementary school to meet the fourth grade students they exchange letters with throughout the school year.

Program expands since inception
The Seniors & Students Program has successfully grown since it was originally implemented in the 1998-99 school year when 24 senior citizen volunteers served as reading tutors for elementary students. Today, more than 200 senior citizens are involved in the Seniors & Students Program and volunteer in a variety of ways. The program has a direct and indirect impact on hundreds of students.
- Senior Cafe: Volunteers gather with students every other week during our Senior Cafes at Lannon, Maple Avenue, Marcy and Woodside Elementary Schools. These meetings generally take place during the students’ lunch period.
- Pen Pal Program: The Pen Pal Project was created as a spin-off of the original program and involves senior citizens corresponding with fourth grade students throughout the school year. In spring, senior volunteers are invited to finally meet their pen pals in person during parties held at each elementary school.
