Hamilton School District grades 5, 6 and 7 band students participated March 10 in the second annual Fifth & Sixth Grade Hamilton Band Festival at Templeton Middle School. A total of 127 students took part in full band rehearsals, sectionals and team-building activities.
Hamilton High School band members planned and led the team-building activities in addition to assisting with rehearsals and sectionals. Grade 7 band members served as mentors to grades 5 and 6 students. Eric Songer, Chaska (Minn.) Middle School band director, served as the guest conductor, Local music educators, including the district’s Jill Casper, served as sectional coaches for various instruments.
The festival ended with a final concert in which Templeton’s grade 7 band performed followed by grades 5 and 6 participants. Students were able to personalize their learning and make connections with band students across the Hamilton School District at this event.
Jim Gornick, the district’s elementary band director, and David Neubauer, Templeton Middle School band director, organized the festival.
