Lannon Elementary School fifth-grader Luke Johnson emerged as the champion of the 2009 Chess Tournament. The winner was determined in the final tournament that was held April 1. Fifth-grader Anthony Moore took second place, and fourth-grader Alexis Gaatz took home the bronze. All Chess Club members received a participation ribbon.
Lannon’s Chess Club challenged the minds of more than 40 students this year who met after school to learn and play chess. In addition, Hamilton High School chess team members, Templeton Middle School students, parent volunteers, teachers and an international chess master assisted Lannon teacher Laureanna Raymond-Duvernell with the club. Raymond-Duvernell expressed appreciation to all the students and families who helped make the club and tournament possible.
