Reading
Your child will:
- understand and select a variety of reading skills and strategies including:
- setting a purpose for readingand adjusting speed to fit the purpose
- identifying structures of different types of text
- checking understanding by asking questions before and during reading
- self-correcting when written material doesn’t make sense by rereading, applying background knowledge and using contextual clues and phonics to understand unfamiliar words

Writing
Using the writing process, your child will:

- include some variety in sentences

Speaking and Listening
Your child will:

Mathematics
Your child will:

- know basic addition/subtraction facts through 20
- know basic multiplication/division facts through the tens
- demonstrate problem solving strategies
- explain mathematical reasoning
Science
Your child will learn about science by asking questions about the world, designing and conducting experiments and recording and reflecting on findings. Your third grader will:
- discover the difference between a biome and a habitat
- design an imaginary organism that can survive in a habitat within a researched biome
- explore and model how light beams travel
- explore what happens to light as it shines on various materials
- observe how the apparent path of the sun changes during the year using tools to track its position during the fall, winter and spring
Social Studies
Focus: Regions of the United States
Your child will:
- identify major geographic regions of the United States
- describe how different environments affect the way people live in different regions
- learn how regions depend on each other
- compare/contrast various regions in terms of topography, climate and population, etc.
- apply reference and map skills to social studies concepts
Fitness Education
Your child will:
- understand and apply the components of health related fitness to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle
- develop and maintain appropriate levels of skill related fitness
- develop understandings so that they can adopt healthy and physically active lifestyles
- develop positive attitudes about physical activity so that they engage in healthy and physically active lifestyles
Music
Your child will:
- sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
- play, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music
- read and notate music
- listen, analyze, describe and evaluate music
Art
Your child will:
- identify, describe and effectively use Elements of Art in their projects
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the Design Principles

Classroom Guidance
Students participate in classroom guidance activities facilitated by a school counselor. Each school provides a developmental guidance curriculum that encompasses dealing with feelings, peer relationships, decision making, protective behaviors and careers. Skills taught will assist each child in his/her academic, emotional and social development. This, in turn, will help ensure success in school, at home and in the community. |
