Capital projects OK’d
School Board members approved numerous projects throughout the district as part of 2008 Buildings & Grounds Capital Outlay. The most significant project is remodeling of the high school gymnasium that is expected to cost $750,000 over two years.

The gym project includes replacement of many materials that are original to the school constructed in 1963. It entails ceiling and tile replacement, new backboards, divider curtain, floors and paint.

The gymnasium update was recommended last year by the community Facilities Advisory Committee which studied the district’s facilities needs. After results of a community survey indicated that the community was not ready to support a new athletic center at the high school, FAC recommended that the existing gymnasium be updated. Committee members reasoned that the existing gymnasium needed immediate attention, and it would continue to be used even if the community approved a new athletic center in the future.

School Board members gave administrators the OK to finalize a contract with J.P. Cullen & Sons Construction for construction management services related to the gymnasium remodeling project.

Other significant projects that were approved include Willow Springs Learning Center boiler replacement for $200,000, addition of air conditioning in the high school fitness center and auxiliary gymnasium for $90,000, roof section replacements at Marcy and Lannon elementary schools for $80,000 each, computer replacement and upgrades throughout the district for $80,000, resurfacing of high school running track for $80,000, Willow Springs hallway tile replacement for $75,000, high school boiler burner replacement for $75,000, and Project Lead The Way remodeling and equipment purchases at Templeton Middle School for $70,000

Three students approved for early graduation
In other business, the School Board approved the early graduation requests of juniors Lisa Boskamp, Timothy Hoppe and Ashley Roembke. The students are eligible to graduate in January 2009, one semester early, after meeting Early Graduation Policy requirements that include course and credit fulfillment, parental permission, teacher letters of recommendation, principal consultation and a written postsecondary plan.

Linden Grove recognized for partnership
The School Board recognized Linden Grove – Menomonee Falls for its partnership with the district. Hamilton Associate Principal and Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator Peter Ferge said the not-for-profit senior care facility provides valuable work experiences for Hamilton students through the health Youth Apprenticeship Program. Linden Grove interviews and hires students who go on to earn nursing assistant certification while learning on-the-job skills. Ferge credited Nursing Director Claire Bletcher and Assistant Director Sandy Hamp who have worked closely with students, Hamilton and with Waukesha County Technical College to “ensure an excellent experience for all involved in this partnership.”

Bletcher, who accepted the award on behalf of Linden Grove, noted the number of students who participated in the program and went on to become health care professionals including physicians, nurses and physical therapists.

Personnel news
In personnel business, the School Board:

  • Approved the retirement request of Maple Avenue paraprofessional Judith Heft, effective at the end of the school year; and
  • Accepted the resignation of district network engineer Jay Jones, effective March 7.
