New textbooks approved
School Board members approved new textbooks at their regular meeting. Instructional Services Director Margaret Bauman, Ph.D., who worked with staff to review and recommend textbooks that best correspond with the district’s curriculum, presented the books.

Following are the new textbooks and the courses for which they will be used in the 2008-09 school year:

  • “Welcome to Hospitality, an Introduction” – Introduction to Hospitality and Food Service;
  • “The Language of Composition” – College Reading and Writing;
  • “Force, Motion and Energy” and “Introductory Physical Science” – new physical science course;
  • “Sociology and You” – Sociology;
  • “International Business” – International Business;
  • “Food for Today” – Food Choices;
  • “Avancemos Levels 1 & 2” – Spanish I & II; and
  • “Carpentry” – Light Building Construction.

District receives honors, donation
In the Superintendent’s Report, Kathleen Cooke, Ph.D, informed the School Board about several honors and a donation.

  • Wisconsin State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster will visit Templeton Middle School Feb. 20 to observe the school’s character education program.
  • Templeton was presented with the award from the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators Feb. 14 that designates it as a “middle school of excellence.”
  • The district was presented with the Connect-Ed Communication for Leadership award Feb. 14 at the American Association of School Administrators national conference in Tampa. For the honor, the district was presented with a $5,000 check for its student scholarship fund.
  • The family of Kelly Gosse, a former teacher in the district who died of cancer this fall, gave a generous donation of books to the district. Gosse’s children are students in the district.

Personnel news
In personnel business, the School Board:

  • accepted the resignation of Maple Avenue second grade teacher Alicia Ide at the end of the school year; and
  • appointed Amy Hunter as a Maple Avenue special services paraprofessional.
