The team award was determined by evaluating the average rank performance of individual team members. The following students were award winners:

  • Jonathan Lucero, Dorothy Palmer and Sean Seraphine, second place in Play Acting;
  • Madison Ruplinger, second place in Informative Speaking; and
  • Shiva Senthil, second place in Radio Speaking.

Hamilton wins third conference forensics tournament

Hamilton High School’s forensics team earned its third conference championship in as many years by taking first place Feb. 17 at the Greater Metro Conference (GMC) tournament held at Brookfield East High School. Hamilton voters approve facilities, operational costs

Voters in the Hamilton School District approved two referendum questions Feb. 20 that will allow for $57.4 million of construction projects, including a new intermediate school, and $1.5 million of operational costs.FaceBookBlock

Two questions were put to voters seeking approval for:

  • a new intermediate school at a cost of $42.9 million and high school classroom projects that include the renovation and expansion of the Applied Engineering and Technology Program for $4.9 million and a 15-classroom addition on the front of the building for $9.6 million. —  61.7% (4,789) percent in favor and 38.3% (2,974) percent opposed; and
  • $1.5 million of operating costs for the intermediate school — 57% (4,424) percent in favor and 43% (3,334) percent opposed.

Supt. Paul Mielke, Ph.D., said he was grateful to the community for its support for the facilities which are needed due to increased growth.

“I want to thank our community for the support for school facilities and operational costs,” Mielke said. “The positive vote is testament to the commitment of our School Board and community members who have studied the long-term needs of the district and thoughtfully recommended this plan.”

“This vote allows the district to accommodate enrollment growth that comes from being an outstanding school district in a great community,” he said.

School Board President Gabe Kolesari said he was happy that the community chose to support the facilities projects and operational costs and commended the citizens’ group that provided leadership on the referendum.

“I am especially grateful for the support of the CLASS Committee – community members, parents and staff who invested many hours and significant energy to inform voters about the need for this referendum,” Kolesari said. “We were fortunate to have a group of passionate citizens who allowed residents to vote on this referendum based on facts.”

CLASS stands for Community Looking After Student Success. Community members Jamie Schounard and Sandi Blackwell co-chaired the committee as it reached out with information to the community.

“The Hamilton School District provides one of the best educational values in the state of Wisconsin,” Schounard said. “I am proud of our community for supporting excellence in education and our kids.”

“Among Wisconsin school districts, Hamilton is in the top one percent in achievement and lowest five percent in spending.” Mielke said. “I believe the community recognized that the district has proven to be a responsible steward of taxpayers’ investment in our schools.”

School officials will work with architects to develop blueprints and put the projects out to bid. Groundbreaking is expected this spring with completion projected in fall of 2019.

Templeton presents technology that enhances learning

Templeton Grade 7 teachers Ashley Pfeifer and Mary Caucutt describe how the virtual reality glasses are used the enhance learning for students.

School Board members and meeting attendees were able to see what students are experiencing using virtual reality devices. Grade 7 teachers Mary Caucutt and Ashley Pfeifer explained how the virtual reality glasses allowed students to take Google Expeditions to faraway lands with life-like experiences that provide relevance to what they are learning. The devices were provided in large part through a grant from the Hamilton Education Foundation.

Library-media specialist Anita Paque described the TMS Makerspace, a specialized lab for personalized learning projects that extend classroom learning. The Makerspace has stations for 3-D printing, green-screen productions, little bits circuits, arts and crafts design, vinyl stencil cutter, stop-motion animation and podcasting. Paque said the area promotes creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

Templeton Middle School applied engineering and technology education teacher Shannon Flaherty was recognized for receiving the Wisconsin Technology Education Association (WTEA) Inspire Award. The award recognizes teachers who have inspired a current or future teacher in the field of technology education.

Curriculum review process reported

Three curricular areas being reviewed in the 2017-18 school year are applied engineering and technology, business education and K-8 science. In addition, three Hamilton High School courses will be added. They are oral and interpersonal communication, drama in literature and production, and performance conditioning. Instructional Services Supervisor Katie Little, Ph.D., updated the School Board on the curriculum review process.

Little said the curriculum and courses are in the process of being written and will be presented to the School Board for approval this summer. In addition, staff are piloting K-5 and 6-8 science programs.

Assessment schedule summarized

Instructional Services Supervisor Katherine Little, Ph.D., summarized standardized assessments required by state and federal law. The Wisconsin Student Assessment System (WSAS) is a comprehensive statewide program designed to provide information about what students know and whether they can apply that knowledge in core academic areas. Assessments include:

  • Wisconsin Forward Exam assesses English language arts and mathematics for grades 3-8; science for grades 4 and 8; and social studies for grades 4, 8 and 10. Students take the assessment online.
  • ACT Aspire Early High School is a summative assessment that measures what students have learned in the areas of English, reading, math, science and writing. The ACT Aspire scores predict how a student will perform on both the ACT and the ACT WorkKeys when they reach grade 11. It is administered to students in grades 9 and 10 in an online format.
  • ACT tests include reading, math, English, science and writing. The ACT with writing is a paper and pencil test.
  • ACT WorkKeys assesses applied mathematics, locating information and reading for information. ACT WorkKeys system is a paper and pencil assessment that helps students understand how they can improve their career readiness skills and may help employers to determine whether individuals are qualified for positions.
    All students take these assessments except for 1 percent of students with significant cognitive disabilities who are assessed with an alternate assessment,
  • Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM).
  • ACCESS for ELLs® is designed to measure English language (EL) proficiency. It is a large-scale assessment based on the WIDA Consortium’s ELD Standards that form the core of Wisconsin’s approach to instructing and testing ELs.

In addition to the state-mandated exams, the district implements elementary benchmark assessments in reading, mathematics and writing, along with Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments in grades 1-8. The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) is administered at primary grade levels. Alternative assessments and those for English Language Learners are also given.

Little noted that the district is investigating the potential of using the STAR assessment as a replacement for MAP testing. If sufficient evidence supports a move from MAP to STAR, a recommendation will be presented to the School Board.

Personnel matters

In personnel matters the School Board:

  • accepted the resignation of Special Services administrative assistant Julie Bigley, effective Feb. 23;
  • approved the appointment of associate kitchen employees Diana Butcher at Templeton and Priscilla Rollmann and Beatrice Bell at Woodside; and
  • modified the contract of Willow Springs Special Services teacher Jennifer Orlowski.

Templeton students to compete in regional National History Day

More than three dozen Templeton Middle School eighth-graders will compete March 10 at the regional level of National History Day. Finalists were selected previously at the school level and will go on to compete at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.StandingBulldogWord

National History Day is an academic enrichment program for students in grades 6-12. Students select topics connected to an annual theme and complete their own in-depth research on the topic. This year the annual theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History.” Students present their conclusions in a written paper, a performance, an exhibit board, a documentary or a website.

The school event is the first step in a competition cycle that can take students from the school level to regional, state and national competitions. At each level of competition, students share their work with peers, historians, educators and professionals in related fields as they compete for special awards and the opportunity to advance to the next level of competition.

DECA recognizes Hamilton’s Charger Corner

Hamilton High School’s Charger Corner earned Gold certification this year and will be recognized at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta.HHS-sign-Home-Of-Chargers

Hamilton students who worked on attaining certification were Andrew Tai and Tyler Vandermolen with assistance from faculty advisors and marketing teachers Amanda Fields and Skip Hay. Hamilton is one of 391 schools in the United States achieving gold level. The Charger Corner has operated for 16 years.

School-based enterprises (SBE) are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. DECA developed the SBE Certification Program to recognize outstanding achievement and motivate excellence and growth. The program provides enterprises with standards for model school store operation. A DECA review committee determines if a school store is certified with a bronze, silver or gold designation. The gold certification is the highest among three levels.

DECA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit student organization preparing its membership for careers in marketing, management, finance and hospitality. It has more than 220,000 members nationwide. There are 78 students involved in Hamilton’s DECA Chapter.

Hamilton schools celebrate Youth Art Month with art show at Pauline Haass Public Library

In celebration of Youth Art Month, the artwork of students from throughout the Hamilton School District will be on display during March at the Pauline Haass Public Library, N64 W23820 Main St., Sussex. The public is invited to view the artwork during regular library hours.YouthArtMonthWeb

A reception honoring the artists and their teachers, held in the library, will be open to the public from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 6. The Friends of the Pauline Haass Public Library will provide refreshments.

Youth Art Month is celebrated each year to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. It began in 1961 as Children’s Art Month with support from the nonprofit Crayon, Water Color and Craft Institute and the National Art Education Association.

Templeton teacher receives technology award

The award recognizes teachers who have inspired a current or future teacher in the field of technology education. Flaherty will receive the award in March at the WTEA Awards Banquet held in conjunction with the annual Technology and Education conference.
