Hamilton High School’s Charger Corner was among 112 school stores nationwide that earned Gold recertification this year and will recognized at the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando. The Hamilton students who worked on the recertification were store managers Sarah Bregant and Lauren Wirsbinski with assistance from faculty advisor and marketing teacher, Skip Hay. Hamilton Charger Corner has operated a Gold Level Certified school-based enterprise (SBE) for five years.

SBEs are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills. Marketing teachers and DECA advisors have used them as a powerful learning lab for more than four decades

DECA developed the SBE Certification Program to recognize outstanding achievement and motivate excellence and growth. The program provides enterprises with standards for model school store operation. A DECA review committee determines if a school store is certified with a bronze, silver or gold designation.  The gold certification is the highest among three levels. To apply for the certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation showing how they have achieved set standards.

DECA is a student organization preparing its membership for careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship. It has more than 200,000 members nationwide. Approximately 120 students are involved in Hamilton’s DECA Chapter.
