The Get Connected Parent Network invites parents to hear from Mike McGowan who will speak on “Setting Boundaries for Adolescence” Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. The presentation will be in the Large Group Area at Templeton Middle School, N59 W2290 Silver Spring Drive. It is free and open to the public.

McGowan is president of McGowan & Associates, a training and consultation firm specializing in alcohol, drug, conflict resolution, workplace and family issues. He has spent the last 23 years working with families and children as an educator, youth care worker, family counselor, alcohol and drug counselor and trainer.

Adolescence can be a difficult time for children and parents. The desire for peer acceptance and increased social interaction occurs at the same time that children want greater independence. It is a time when the push for independence can lead to confusion over appropriate boundaries. McGowan will talk about adolescent behavior — what’s normal and what’s not. He will guide parents through establishing rules and consequences that are comfortable for their families. McGowan’s presentation will focus on issues most relevant to parents of children in middle and high school, however all parents are welcome to attend — regardless of their children’s age or school district in which they reside.

The Get Connected Parent Network helps parents navigate children through their school years by providing:
  • age-appropriate information;
  • networking with other parents;
  • presentations from professionals; and
  • guidance and support.

Get Connected is sponsored by the Parent and Community Triangle, a partnership between the Hamilton School District, Sussex-area Outreach Services and community parents. Funding and support provided by United Way of Waukesha County “Helping Kids Succeed” initiative.
