Miranda Simes, a Templeton Middle School sixth-grader, won first place in the Wisconsin Elks Clubs’ State Essay Competition. This year’s essay theme was “Why I’m Proud to be an American.”

Simes earned top prize at the county level earlier this year, and her entry was forwarded to the state level. She earned $100 prize money for her success at the state level.

The contest was open to students in fifth through eighth grades. Essays were limited to 250 words and were judged based on their originality, theme development, mechanics and neatness.
